JACKSON, Tenn., – After leading by only a single point at
the half, the University of North Alabama women’s basketball team
outscored Lane College 35-23 over the final 20 minutes to secure a
66-53 road victory Thursday evening. The 13-point win evens the
team’s record at 2-2 on the year and sets up a home showdown against
second-ranked Delta State on Saturday.
Against Lane,
the Lions trailed most of the second half before a late spurt gave
them the lead. The Dragons opened the game on an 8-0 run and held
the lead until a three-pointer by Chelsey Malone gave UNA its first
lead at 29-28 with 1:09 remaining.
The teams
traded baskets to close out the half, including a lay-up at the
buzzer by Amber Rutherford to put the Lions on to 31-30 at
intermission.
Lane scored
first in the opening minute of the second half, but a 12-2 run gave
UNA a lead it would never relinquish.
Rutherford
finished with a game-high 25 points to lead the Lions. Tandra Inmon
added 13 points for the Lions while Malone also reached double
figures with 10 on the night. Brittany Godsey also recorded a
season-high seven assists.
UNA will take
its 2-2 record back home to host the undefeated and second-ranked
Lady Statesmen. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m. at Flowers Hall.
