VALDOSTA, Ga. -- A 29
percent shooting performance from the floor never allowed the
University of North Alabama women's basketball team to get on track
in its season opener as the Lions fell to Tampa 57-41 in the opening
game of the Manwell Produce Lady Blazer Classic at Valdosta State
University.
North Alabama
fell behind 26-19 at the half after making just seven-of-23 first
half shots. The Lions stayed in the game by limiting Tampa to just
11 field goals and 32 percent shooting in the half. UNA's shooting
woes didn't improve in the second half as the Lions made just
seven-of-25 shots and North Alabama ended the night having made just
two of 13 three-point attempts.
UNA (0-1) was led in scoring by Jameica York with 12 points and
Amber Rutherford with 11. York added nine rebounds and three
assists.
Gianna Messina
led Tampa with 21 points and nine rebounds. She was the only Spartan
in double-figures.
Each team had 14 turnovers in the game but Tampa held a decisive
42-32 rebounding edge on the Lions.
UNA will play on Sunday at 11 a.m. Central against Puerto Rico Cayay.
