UNA WOMEN FALL 60-52 AT GEORGIA SOUTHWESTERN

AMERICUS, Ga., – A second-half rally came up just short for the University of North Alabama women’s basketball team Monday afternoon during a 60-52 road loss at Georgia Southwestern. Amber Rutherford scored a game-high 20 points and pulled down 11 rebounds in a losing effort as the Lions fell to 1-2 on the season.

After trailing by 10 at the break, UNA was able to cut the deficit to a single point on three different occasions in the final six minutes of play. The Hurricanes, however, had an answer each time, including a three-pointer from Nadirah Gardner with 3:19 remaining to take a 50-46 lead.

After two free throws by Jameica York, GSW got another three-point shot to go ahead 53-48 and the Lions would get no closer the rest of the way. York added 16 points and seven assists, but no other UNA player had more than six points in the game.

VALDOSTA, Ga. -- It took more than six minutes for the University of North Alabama women's basketball team to get on the scoreboard but the Lions then rolled to a 90-24 rout of Puerto Rico-Cayey for their first win of the season.

CARROLLTON, Ga., – The North Alabama women’s basketball team quickly found themselves in a double-digit deficit Tuesday against 13th-ranked West Georgia and was never able to recover during a 71-60 road loss.

TUSCALOOSA – The University of North Alabama women’s basketball team dropped its second straight game Wednesday evening and third in the last four contests, coming up on the short end of a 72-53 decision at Stillman College. The loss
drops the team’s record to 8-10 on the season while Stillman (3-9) won for just the third time this year.

FLORENCE -- North Alabama shot just 23 percent from the floor and could never overcome a 19-point halftime deficit as the UNA women's basketball team dropped a Gulf South Conference home contest to West Alabama 72-51. The loss drops UNA to 8-9 overall and 2-2 in the GSC. West Alabama improved to 6-11 and 2-1.

FLORENCE – Five players reached double digits in scoring as the University of North Alabama women’s basketball team knocked off Harding 77-74 Thursday evening at Flowers Hall. The three-point win broke the Lady Bisons’ six-game winning streak and avenged an 84-81 road overtime loss on Dec. 15.

  SEATTLE, Wash., - Seattle Pacific opened the second half with a 16-0 run to break open a close game and cruise to a 65-44 victory over North Alabama Saturday evening in the final game of the Sodexho Tip-Off Classic on the SPU campus.
  CENTRAL WASHINGTON DOWNS LIONS 75-57
  SEATTLE, Wash., - A 15-2 run to end the first half put Central Washington ahead 34-18 and North Alabama was never able to get the lead under double digits during the final 20 minutes of a 75-57 season-opening defeat Friday afternoon at Seattle Washington’s Sodexho Tip-Off Classic.
  WOMEN'S BASKETBALL FALLS IN EXHIBITION

  CARROLLTON, Ga., – The North Alabama women’s basketball team shot 62 percent from three-point range in a key Gulf South Conference road game and picked up a 55-52 victory over West Georgia Saturday evening in Carrollton, Ga.
  RUTHERFORD NAMED GSC EAST PLAYER OF THE WEEK
  BIRMINGHAM – Officials with the Gulf South Conference have named North Alabama forward Amber Rutherford the GSC East Division Player of the Week.  The sophomore from Hatton had a big week leading the Lions to a 2-0 mark in conference play. UNA defeated Valdosta State on Saturday, then knocked off West Florida on Monday to improve to 9-10 overall with a 2-2 record in the conference.   In the two games, Rutherford averaged 22.5 points and seven rebounds.  Against VSU, she shot 80 percent from the field and connected on five of six shots from the charity stripe as UNA posted the 55-52 victory. She then exploded against UWF, scoring 29 points while adding a steal in the 71-64 win.
  UNA WOMEN EVEN GSC RECORD WITH 71-64 WIN OVER WEST FLORIDA
  FLORENCE – Amber Rutherford scored 29 points to lead North Alabama to a
71-64 home win over West Florida Monday evening in Gulf South Conference women’s basketball action.  The Lions used a late run to pull away in a close game and improve to 9-10 overall, and even their conference record at 2-2 on the year.
  FOWLER GETS FIRST GSC WIN AT UNA; DEFEAT VSU, 55-52
  FLORENCE -- The North Alabama women's basketball team snapped a six-game losing streak to Valdosta State and handed first-year head coach Terry Fowler his first Gulf South Conference victory with a hard-fought 55-52 win over the Lady Blazers.  The game was tied at 52-52 with 45 seconds left when Tandra Inmon drove in for a go- ahead basket. VSU then missed two free throws and UNA added a free throw from Jameica York for a three-point advantage. Valdosta State's Carley Peterson missed on a three-point attempt at the buzzer and UNA had the victory.
  WEST ALABAMA HANDS UNA WOMEN SECOND STRAIGHT GSC LOSS
  LIVINGSTON– A 12-point half-time deficit proved to be too much for the University of North Alabama women’s basketball team to overcome as the Lions dropped a 75-65 road decision to West Alabama Monday evening in Gulf South Conference play.  UNA trailed 39-27 at the half, and managed to outscore the Lady Tigers 38-36 over the final 20 minutes. Four UNA players reached double figures in scoring, including Amber Rutherford’s game-high 16 points.
  THREE-POINTER BY ASHFORD GIVES UNA WOMEN VICTORY
  FLORENCE – Shay Ashford hit a three-point shot with 1.7 seconds remaining to give the University of North Alabama women’s basketball team an 80-77 victory over Ouachita Baptist Wednesday afternoon at Flowers Hall. The winning shot capped a game-high 23-point effort for the junior from Tupelo, Miss., who went 7-of-11 from beyond the arc.

  PENSACOLA, Fla., – Southern Arkansas used a second-half offensive surge to break open a close game and coast to a 67-52 victory over the University of North Alabama women’s basketball team Saturday afternoon at the UWF Surf Burger Holiday Classic.

  FAIRFIELD, Ala., – The University of North Alabama women’s basketball team got back on the winning track Tuesday evening with a 65-57 road win over Miles College. The eight-point win broke a three-game losing streak and improved the Lions’ overall record to 4-5 on the season.

  ARKADELPHIA, Ark., - The University of North Alabama women’s basketball team matched the No. 4 team in the county shot for shot and rebound for rebound before falling 78-70 Saturday evening at Henderson State’s Duke Wells Center.
  DELTA STATE WOMEN USE SECOND-HALF SURGE TO DOWN LIONS
  CLEVELAND, Miss., – Delta State used a dominating second-half performance to deliver the knock out blow against North Alabama and claim a 70-43 victory Wednesday evening in women’s college basketball action. A 22-2 Lady Statesmen run midway through the second half ended any chances of a comeback for the Lions at Walter Sillers Coliseum.

FLORENCE -- The University of North Alabama women's basketball team gave new head coach Terry Fowler a victory in his first game at the school with a 92-64 rout of Lane College at Flowers Hall.  UNA made eight three-pointers in the first half to build a 55-29 lead at intermission and managed to hold off a Lane threat early in the second half to preserve the win.

  NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Taking to the court for the first time under new coach Terry Fowler, the University of North Alabama women's basketball team came out on the short end of a 75-50 score at Division I Belmont.
  PRESEL NAMED ASSISTANT WOMEN’S BASKETBALL COACH AT UNA
  FLORENCE, Ala., – University of North Alabama athletic director Joel Erdmann has announced the hiring of Dan Presel as assistant women’s basketball coach.  Presel will rejoin current Lions head coach Terry Fowler, who took over head coaching duties in March. The two previously coached together at Spring Hill College, where Presel spent a total of six seasons.
  FOWLER HIRED AS UNA HEAD WOMEN'S BASKETBALL COACH
 

FLORENCE -- Terry Fowler has been hired as the seventh head women's basketball coach in University of North Alabama history, according to UNA Athletic Director Dr. Joel Erdmann.  Fowler comes to UNA after four seasons as head coach at Spring Hill College in Mobile where he led the school to a 19-13 record in 2006, including a Top 25 national ranking in the NAIA.
