JOHNSON LEADS LIONS TO 67-61 WIN AT NO. 20 ARKANSAS TECH

RUSSELLVILLE, Ark., – Kenny Johnson scored a career-high 28 points to lead the University of North Alabama men’s basketball team to a 67-61 road win over 20th-ranked Arkansas Tech Monday evening at Tucker Coliseum on the ATU campus.

 

The senior from Plaquemine, La., was 6-of-11 from the field and 15-of-16 from the free throw line as the Lions improved to 10-5 on the season.

 

With the loss, Arkansas Tech drops to 10-3 on the year. Two of the losses were to the Lions, including a 91-90 overtime defeat on Nov. 29 at Flowers Hall.

 

In a rematch that featured 11 ties and 13 lead changes, the Lions were able to use an 18-4 second-half run to seize momentum.

HARDING WOMEN HOLD OFF LIONS TO STAY UNDEFEATED UNA MEN WIN REMATCH AGAINST HARDING

FLORENCE – After leading by as many as 16 points in the second half, Harding held off a late North Alabama rally to pick up a 70-63 victory and remain perfect at 12-0 on the season. With the loss, UNA drops to 7-8 on the season.
 

FLORENCE – Thomas Fraise had 26 points and two other Lion players reached double digits in scoring as the University of North Alabama men’s basketball team got back on the winning track with a 98-92 victory over Harding Saturday afternoon at Flowers Hall.

FLORENCE -- Comcast Cable in Florence will air the entire press conference where Terry Bowden was named as the new head football coach at the University of North Alabama on each of the next four days. The press conference will be aired on Comcast Channel 3 in Florence at 5 p.m. on Friday, January 2, 5 p.m. on Saturday Jan. 3, 5 p.m. on Sunday January 4 and at 8 p.m. on Monday, January 5.

FLORENCE -- The University of North Alabama has announced the hiring of Terry Bowden as the Lions’ head football coach.

Bowden, 52, returns to college coaching for the first time since 1998 when he was head coach at Auburn University. He will be introduced to the news media and Lion supporters at a news conference at 11 a.m. at the Performance Center on the UNA campus on New Years Day.

Bowden becomes the eighth head coach in UNA’s modern football history. He inherits a UNA program that has enjoyed four straight seasons with 10-plus wins, and has made four straight NCAA Division II playoff appearances. The Lions were 12-2 in 2008 and reached the semifinals of the Division II playoffs.

LIONS TO HOLD REUNION FOR 1999 WORLD SERIES TEAM

FLORENCE -- The University of North Alabama will honor the members of the Lions' 1999 NCAA Division II World Series team with a 10-year reunion celebration on March 28.  The 1999 team posted a 45-12 record, won the Gulf South Conference and South Central Regional crowns and advanced to the Division II World Series for the first time in school history.  The reunion will be held on Saturday, March 28 in conjunction with the Lions' home Gulf South Conference series with Montevallo.
