DEPARTMENT OF CHEMISTRY
AND INDUSTRIAL HYGIENE

University of North Alabama

The Department of Chemistry and Industrial Hygiene offers major programs in professional chemistry, general chemistry, environmental chemistry, and industrial hygiene leading to the Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree; a chemistry minor; courses and programs applicable to preprofessional curricula in the medical and related health fields; basic coursework applicable to physical science requirements in the general studies components for all degree programs; the subject field for secondary teachers of chemistry offered through the College of Education; and supporting coursework for other major programs.

All the full-time faculty in the Department have Ph.D. degrees.  Areas of specialization include analytical chemistry, environmental chemistry, industrial hygiene, inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry and physical chemistry.  The laboratories are well equipped with all major types of chemical instrumentation including an AAnalyst 800 Atomic Absorption Spectrometer,  a Nicolet model Impact 410 Fourier transform infrared spectrometer and a Varian MERCURY 300 MHz nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometer.  All equipment is intended for use by undergraduate students during laboratory courses and research projects.  No lectures or laboratories are taught by graduate students.

In addition to any financial aid that a student may receive from UNA or other sources, the Department manages its own scholarship program.  Incoming freshman and transfer students majoring in chemistry or industrial hygiene may apply for an endowed scholarship which provides funds for up to four years.  Also, UNA students currently enrolled and majoring in chemistry or industrial hygiene may apply for renewable, one-semester scholarships.
