Health, Physical
Education & Recreation

The department of Health, Physical Education and Recreation is located in Flowers Hall, a $2.5 million health and physical education facility. In addition to the physical education activity areas, the facilities include a Human performance Laboratory, Faculty and Staff Wellness Center, Student Fitness Center and swimming pool. The HPER Department has also been designated as the UNA Wellness Research and Service Center.

The faculty in the Department of HPER offer knowledge and experiences in a wide variety of different areas. Several members of the HPER faculty are active in research, in conjunction with the Human Performance Laboratory and Wellness Center. Many have their research published or presented at state, district, or national HPERD Conferences. Many of the HPER faculty also serve as consultants to various school systems, recreational agencies, mental health associations, sports medicine clinics, health and fitness centers, hospitals and corporate wellness centers as well as UNA Program Services.

The departmental faculty are not only dedicated in helping students with their programs of study in HPER, but also in assisting them in either continuing their education in graduate work or in securing employment related to their program of study. Students are strongly encouraged to drop by faculty offices and visit with their advisors as well as other faculty members to discuss academic, career, or other concerns that they may have.

The HPER Department is firmly committed to the proposition that education involves more than classroom activity. The Physical Education Majors Club was organized to broaden the knowledge and experiences of its members. This professional growth is accomplished by trips to state and national conferences. In addition to several miscellaneous activities each year, the club sponsors camping trips, snow skiing trips, "super team" competition, community projects, and banquets for club members, faculty, staff, and their guests. The club is also actively involved in a scholarship program, awarding tuition scholarships annually to two club members. The PE Club has won numerous state awards.
