Creating a DEM - 3D analysis and mapping

1.      Create personal geodatabase and import relevant tables and shapefiles

2.      Create TIN from features

3.      First check the wv_centroid file and indicate that height source is DEATH

4.      Next select the other feature layer that defines the spatial extent of TIN i.e. wv_state boundary. Then click OK.

5.      The TIN layer should be displayed as below

6.      Next TIN surface should be converted to raster image so that it can layer on be draped as a DEM in ArcScene. Click on 3D Analyst, Convert and choose TIN to Raster.

7.      Specify appropriate raster layer name and leave default values as they are.

8.      The raster layer should be added to the view and should be appear like the one shown below.

9.      The TIN surface and raster can now be viewed in 3D in ArcScene. Start ArcScene in the usual way and add the two surfaces. The surfaces appear is below and so the vertical exaggeration factor must be changed.

10.  Right click on the 3d_asbestosis layer name and choose the Base Heights tab. Change the Z Unit Conversion factor e.g. to 0.005.

11.   The 3D Tin surface should then appear as below.

12.  Alternatively you can turn off the Tin surface and display the raster layer alone. You can change the display color ramp from black and white to some color ramp of your choice.
