APPLICATIONS (GIS TOPIC) PAPER
SPRING 2000

OBJECTIVES:

• To begin to gain a better understand of the GIS industry,
• To research and study a GIS application of your interest,
• To be exposed to practical uses of GIS,
• To develop writing, teamwork and presentation skills, and
• To begin to develop final project ideas.

 
PROCESS:

• Choose a partner (one that you have not partnered with thus far),
• Determine the topic that you would like to research after discussion with your partner and determination of the basics of the idea (Topic is due on January 25)
• Study the topic in detail using a variety of sources (journals, magazines, books, interviews, and the Web - do not limit yourself to one type of source),
• Prepare a paper that describes the topic and contains the items below,
• Complete an Executive Summary of the topic for distribution to the class (you make the copies - DO NOT print out the copies, use a copier . . . please!)
• Create a presentation for the class in either Powerpoint or HTML code that lasts between 8 - 10 minutes (practice your presentation!)
• Submit the paper, presentation and copies of the Executive Summary on February 17, and
• After receiving the graded paper, convert the Executive Summary, paper and presentation to HTML code for inclusion in your personal web page.

RESPONSIBILITIES:  Paper must include, but is not limited to:

• Overview of the topic,
• Uses (users) of the application,
• Examples of the application in use,
• Benefits that the use of GIS for this application provides,
• Problems that the use of GIS for this application provides,
• Output from this type of application, and
• Conclusion

 Half of the class will be randomly selected to present this paper.  The remaining half of the class will present the Project Example paper.  All components of the paper (Executive Summary, paper, and presentation are due on February 17).  The html conversion is due one week after papers are returned.

Presentation is limited to five to seven slides. Presentation is 25% of the grade while the paper is 75% of the grade for those providing a presentation.  For those not providing a presentation, the slides are 10% of the grade and the paper is 90% of the grade.
