OBJECTIVE: To gain an understanding of:
|
PROCESS:
Go to the library (or any other location of possible sources) and research data that is relative to your interests and Alabama (i. e., water consumption by county, population density by the county , etc.). Your data must be accurate to the county level and must be applicable to a choropleth map (rate, ratio or percent).
Enlarge an Alabama map to fit on an 11 x 17 inch worksheet (and eventually an 11 x 17 inch drawing paper), however remember that the map border must be in a ratio of 6 x 9.
Graph your data in an ordered array and determine how many categories you need. Finally, divide your data into the pre-determined number of classes using the natural breaks classification method (i.e., the natural breaks found in the data array).
Place your data on the worksheet by category. Include all other necessary information on your worksheet. Shade each county according to its data value using colored pencils.
Transpose your worksheet to your drawing paper. Shade your counties using chart-pak. Include all the related map elements on your map.
Have your map copied at 100% resolution and reduced to fit on a single page (8.5 x 11)
Each person is required to turn in a final map, the copies, and an explanation of how you followed the "map communication process" and the "map design process".
