SITUATION: The Buffalo River Tourism Bureau has approached your mapping firm regarding creating a map of the Buffalo River area with the idea to recruit environmental tourism groups. They have asked you to create a map from the Riverside Quadrangle map that may be used during presentations to eco-tourism organizations. They want to "show off" or emphasize the recreational aspects of the Buffalo River and surrounding area. Specifically, you want to map the area between UTM 444,000 East, 3,919,000 North (lower left corner) and UTM 454,000 East, 3,926,000 North (upper right). Since they are not in the cartography business, they are leaving it up to you to decide what features go on the map.
Your decisions regarding map compilation (what to keep in and what to leave out) must be made with their request in mind. In addition to the features that must be mapped, they need to have a certain amount of marginal information included with all the necessary labeling. The scale of the final map should remain the same as the original map.
This is an exercise in the compilation, generalization and layout of a map. First, you must determine what needs to be compiled from your source map onto your new map.
Second, design your map incorporating all required information. At this stage you should create a detailed thumbnail sketch of your map.
Finally, create your final inked, map incorporating all the information from your worksheet.
Remember that there are many ways to depict map data. Be sure to study the chapters in your textbook that relate to this exercise. Follow good compilation, generalization and layout rules.
