COMPUTER MAPPING
FINAL PROJECT OVERVIEW
SUMMER 1999

Lisa Keys-Mathews
Department of Geography
University of North Alabama

All of your work in Computer Mapping is directed toward a basic understanding of the art and science of cartography; specifically the design and construction of maps.   You have researched map projections and the effect of data classification methods on a data set.  In addition, you created a map of campus and compared multiple designs of the same area.  Toward this end, it is time to direct your attention toward the different types of maps.  Think about the table in Clarke's book (modeled after Unwin) on page 177.  You are to research the different map types listed below and then describe when these map types would be used, how the design element changes with different map types, and how the same set of data (i.e., population density) can be mapped a variety of ways (dot, choropleth, cartogram, graduated symbol).  Today in class you will create a dot map, graduated symbol map, ordered colored map and choropleth map of the United States 1997 population.  These maps should be well-designed and used to support your final project paper.

Your final paper should revolve around researching the different map types listed below (history, construction, uses, advantages and disadvantages, etc.) and then a comparison of how they portray information.  You should find examples of these maps and you are not limited to maps that you create - just remember to provide sources for each map.  Some map types will be easier to research than others, but I suggest that you consult/discuss your findings with the other members of the class (email, phone calls, cries for help, etc.).  Also include how the design element changes with different map types and how the same set of data (i.e., population density) can be mapped a variety of ways.  Finally, I want you to interpret the maps you create in class and the maps you find, compare your interpretations between the different maps and discuss how different map types require a different type of interpretation and will yield different interpretation results.

The maps you are to research are:

Dot Map Network Map Colored Area Cartogram
Symbol Map Ordered Network Map Ordered Colored Map Chart Maps
Graduated Symbol Flow Map Choropleth Map Bar Graph Maps
