COURSE PLANNING SURVEY
Lisa Keys-Mathews
Department of Geography
University of North Alabama

OBJECTIVEThis survey is a very important part of this class, therefore I expect each of you to spend time thinking about your responses. We will discuss each question in class; I expect a response to every question from every class member. I use these surveys to direct the class projects and research throughout the semester.  In addition, this exercise will teach you how to download a file, use it in a work processing system, upload the file to the unaalpha server, and then attach it to an e-mail message and send it off.

PROCESS:    First, you should save a copy of this file onto a diskette in a "text" format.  To do this, go to File . . . Save as . . .  Make sure that you choose (or preferably type) the .txt option and save the file titled by your first name (with the .txt extension).  Next, take the file into any word processing package (Word, WordPerfect, Works, or even Notepad) and answer the questions by typing your information into the file.   Remove all the instructional material and place your name and date on the page in the upper right hand corner.  Once you have completed the survey (answering, in detail, all the questions), attach the file to an e-mail message and send it to me.

What are your main objectives upon graduation? (Be very specific and very serious. [i. e. I wish to obtain a job within what time frame? Making what kind of money? At what location? Doing what? Working with what type of organization? Performing what type of functions? Gaining what type of experience?])

In terms of getting the job that you desire, what are your strengths? your weaknesses? What can you bring to an organization? What can you do for them? Why should someone hire you? (Be forthright and honest.)

Describe, in detail, two or three diverse career paths (career paths are general; jobs are specific) that you would like to follow at some point in your career. (Marketing, sales, research, analyst, programmer, graduate school, education, training, management, etc.)

Describe, in detail, two or three diverse jobs (career paths are general; jobs are specific) that you would accept upon graduation.

List the skills required for each of these jobs. Organize the skills by the skills you believe you have and the skills you need to acquire to obtain each of these jobs.

List a few skills that are not required for each of these jobs, but would give you an edge over your competition.

What skills do you want this class to help you obtain?

How can you gain these skills through this class?

How can this class help you obtain your goals?
