Welcome
to my home page created for UNA students majoring in Elementary Education
(K-6). It is a privilege to teach in one of the most prestigious and well-respected
teacher-education programs in the southeastern United States. After several
years of extensive program development, the Department of Elementary Education
now has the new K-6 program in place. It emphasizes effective strategies
for teaching Reading, Language Arts, Technology, and Special Needs Children.
Our mission is to equip you for a successful beginning in the elementary
classroom. Simply stated, you can make an impact your very first year
of teaching. We emphasize innovative, research-based strategies governed
by real-world practice through firsthand experience in elementary classrooms.
Clinical experiences in local schools, video vignettes, and in-class demonstrations
are the types of experiences you can expect to encounter.
While the program is quite demanding and our expectations are extremely
high, you will enter that crucial first year with confident assurance
that you are ready to deal with the complexities of classroom teaching.
It should encourage you to know that our graduates constantly remind us
of the value of a UNA teaching degree. They are getting hired and making
an impact in the lives of children, performing extremely well on the Alabama
Professional Educators Performance Evaluation (PEPE), earning advanced
degrees at some of the best colleges in the nation, and receiving top
honors such as "Teacher-of-the Year" in school districts from
California to New York. We have an exciting and dynamic faculty; I am
honored to teach in UNAs Department of Elementary Education with
friends who happen to be colleagues. Dr. Janice Nicholson, our Department
Chair, has continued to motivate and challenge us with new ideas and innovative
ways to improve our program. As a result, you will benefit from enthusiastic
professors who pledge to work together to help you achieve your dream
of becoming an elementary teacher.
