| Mentor (men'
tor) n. "A wise and trusted counselor or teacher" --- The
American Heritage Dictionary. |
The best advice I received while attending Vanderbilt University came
from my major professor and friend, Dr. Dorothy Skeel. As my wife and
I stopped by her home following graduation, she offered simple yet profound
advice that I have never forgotten. As a small group of students expressed
our appreciation for how much she helped us during our studies, she remarked:
"Always remember that people in places of leadership have attained
their status because somebody helped them. Nobody, no matter how powerful,
is self-sufficient. Try to repay your appreciation to those who make you
"look good" on a daily basis, from the custodian at work to
your spouse and children at home. You honor me by stating that I have
been that person in your lives. So, in return, I ask that you become that
person in the lives of those with whom you interact on a daily basis and
the students who will be placed under your care."
Dr. Skeel reminded me to stop and remember those who have assisted me
in my professional development and achieve my career goals. Also, she
taught us to never forget those who have helped us along the way.
Therefore, this link is dedicated to the 3 most influential educators
in my life. Click on the name to read this tribute to my mentors:
Mr. Fred Hendon, Retired
Principal, Harlan Elementary School
Dr. Janice Nicholson, Chair,
Department of Elementary Education, UNA
The late Dr. Dorothy J. Skeel, Professor
Emeritus, Vanderbilt University.
