Interlibrary Loan Services for Distance Education

Interlibrary Loan Forms

For distance education students, materials not available either from their local public library or from Collier Library may by requested through UNA's Interlibrary Loan (ILL) service. For those students living more than one hour's drive from campus, library staff will arrange for the delivery of books and photocopies directly to the student, either by mail or electronically. Such requests take time as the materials must be shipped twice (from the lending library to UNA and then on to the student). Books will be mailed with instructions for returning them before the due date to UNA's Interlibrary Loan Department. Photocopies need not be returned. Students living nearer to campus should pick up their materials in person at the Collier Library Circulation Desk.

Interlibrary loan services are provided according to these guidelines:

A separate request must be submitted for each item.  ILL request forms are available online or by request from the User Services Coordinator.

Paper ILL request forms may be faxed (256-765-4884) or mailed to the User Services Coordinator (UNA Box 5028, University of North Alabama, Florence, AL 35632-0001). Telephone requests are not accepted. Questions and comments should be sent to Leigh Thompson, User Services Coordinator or e-mailed to dlthompson@una.edu

  1. NOTICE: WARNING CONCERNING COPYRIGHT RESTRICTIONS

The copyright law of the United States (Title 17, U.S. Code) governs the making of photocopies and other reproductions of copyrighted material.

Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries and archives are authorized to furnish a photocopy or other reproduction. One of these specified conditions is that the photocopy or reproduction is not to be "used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research." If a user makes a request for, or later uses, a photocopy or reproduction for purposes in excess of "fair use," that user may be liable for copyright infringement.

This institution reserves the right to refuse to accept a copying order if, in its judgment, fulfillment of the order would involve violation of copyright law.

By submitting an ILL request the user agrees to abide by these copyright restrictions. Copyright guidelines limit the number of articles a library can request during a calendar year from any given periodical title published within the past five years. This applies to all patron requests combined (not just a single individual); therefore, requests are sometimes rejected based on copyright restrictions.

It takes time to obtain material from other libraries. Allow a minimum of three weeks for receipt of items through Interlibrary Loan. Items may arrive sooner if obtained within Alabama; the requests may take longer if they have to be sent out of state for fulfillment.

Priority will be given to processing the first five articles requested by an individual within a week's time; others will be ordered as time permits. Normally a maximum of three ILL book requests will be processed at one time for each distance learning student. At least one of the three borrowed items should be returned before additional books are requested.

Although there is no direct charge to the student for interlibrary loans, processing of each request costs the library at least $15.00. Users are urged first to consult locally available materials and then to use this service judiciously.

Materials that must be returned will have a clearly indicated due date. These items must be returned to Collier Library, either by mail or in person, by this date. The fine for overdue interlibrary loan materials is $1.00 per day per item.

Lending libraries determine the due dates of books obtained via interlibrary loan--usually three weeks. Due dates are strictly observed and ILL items cannot be renewed.

Materials lost or damaged are the responsibility of the borrower. Charges are set by the lending library. The Interlibrary Loan Department will notify the user of any such charges.

Regular Interlibrary Loan Department hours are Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. The phone number is (256) 765-4308. Feel free to call with any questions.
