Mission, Goals, and Objectives
The mission of the University of North Alabama Music unit is to provide an environment where students can develop their full aesthetic potential and to provide curricula and performance opportunities to meet essential competencies as established by the National Association of Schools of Music.
Departmental Goals
- To show the quality of our overall music program through continuing National Association of Schools of Music Accreditation and to improve identified components, such as:
- To revise and improve courses included in the general studies Component, including performance on the CAAP Exam.
- To improve course offerings and scheduling.
- To improve instruction.
- To improve the advisement and counseling of students.
- To encourage curricula reforms for major program improvement and Viability, specifically:
- To revise and evaluate major programs in:
- Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science Degree with a Major in Music; Option I (Commercial Music), Option II (Sacred Music), and Option III (Performance).
- Bachelor of Music in Music Education Degree (P-12 Vocal/Choral and Instrumental Music)
- To facilitate the recruitment and retention of a student population of quality and in sufficient numbers to support each major program in music.
- To encourage personnel development, research, and departmental Efficiency, specifically:
- To encourage the professional development of the department chair, faculty and staff.
- To promote scholarly activities including faculty research, student research, and student organizations related to academic programs.
- To promote departmental administration and operation.
- To promote service to the university and community including Performance, research, and volunteer activities.
Objectives
Objective for the Music Unit are realized through programs designed:
for students who wish to pursue personal or professional interests in their applied area or to help them prepare for advanced study in graduate school;
for students who desire to enter the teaching profession through preparation in their chosen area of specialization Vocal/Choral Music P-12 or Instrumental Music P-12;
for students who wish to pursue a career in the music industry;
for the general student through offerings in fundamental music courses, performing ensembles, and applied music;
to provide a minor field of concentration in the College of Arts and Sciences.
