Music Building
The music building, a two-story structure, is part of the Lurleen B. Wallace Fine Arts Complex. It includes offices, studios, classrooms, practice rooms, a band rehearsal hall, a choral rehearsal hall, a 100-seat recital hall, computer lab, piano lab, and music library. The large performance venue for the music department is Norton Auditorium, a beautiful 1,721-seat facility with a nine-foot Steinway concert grand piano and a Wicks 40 rank pipe organ. The Entertainment Industry Center, located in the Guillot University Center, provides a modern recording studio that supports our dynamic Commercial Music program.
Practice rooms open from 8:00 a.m. to 9 :00 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Music Library (Listening Center/Computer Lab)
The Music Library/Listening Center's principle mission is to provide materials in support of the curriculum of the Department of Music and the research of its faculty. The emphasis of the collection is on printed music (scores) and sound recordings in the area of classical music. The Library's collection policy adjusts to meet the needs of the changing programs in the Department of Music.
LOCATION
The library is located on the second floor of the music building, Room 211. The collections are located in two area: scores and collected editions are in Room 214; and audio cassettes, phono discs, compact discs, video cassettes and reference material are located in Room 213. Due to limited space, all current reference, periodicals and music books are located in Collier Library.
GENERAL COLLECTION
The general collection contains over 1,510 musical scores, 512 collected editions of Bach, Handel, Mozart and Schubert. There are approximately 3,154 sound recordings in various formats ranging from audiocassettes, phono discs, compact discs and videocassettes. Reference consists of an incomplete set of Groves Dictionary of Music and Musicians, Scribners Radio Music Library, The International Library of Piano Music, Popular American Composers, Harvard Dictionary of Music, International Library of Music and an Encyclopedia of the Opera.
There are two computers located in the Music Library/Listening Center. The UNACAT online public catalog is located in Room 213 for students to search the collection electronically. The secretary also has access to UNACAT through her computer. Items can be searched by title, author, and subject or keyword search.
LISTENING CENTER/COMPUTER LAB
The Listening Center/Computer Lab is equipped with a TV/VCR,DVD Combo, 4 five disc cd players with headphones/6 computers with internet access and dvd, and compact disc capabilities.
Three JVC turntables and one Dual, two JVC compact disc players, one Pioneer dual cassette player/recorder and one JVC dual audiocassette player/recorder. We also have a Koss compact dis copier. The equipment is operated by the faculty and staff only. If staff is unavailable, students are allowed to change the phono discs, audio or videocassette tape, and compact discs. The staff properly cleans and maintains all equipment. The Academic Secretary reports Service requests.
CIRCULATION PRIVILEGES
Music faculty and non-music faculty may check out recordings and scores for use in their home or studio. The circulating period is 120 days. Recalled items may be issued a new due date. Faculty will be notified by e-mail or phone. No overdue fines are issued to faculty. Students are not allowed to check out material for use outside the Music Library.
Reference material is non-circulating, except by special permission.
Reserves are items placed on reserve shelves by faculty members for use in a class and they are kept at the front desk so they are always available to faculty and his or her students. Personal copies of books, scores, articles and journals may be placed on reserve. Reserves normally circulate for two hours inside the library. This two-hour policy applies to faculty as well as students. If a faculty member checks out something that is on reserve for only his/her class, it may be kept as long as needed with permission. If faculty member checks out an item that is on reserve for another faculty member's class, the two-hour circulation period must be observed.
Faculty may reserve audiovisual equipment for use in campus classrooms. To schedule equipment for classes held Monday - Friday, reservations must be received at least 48 hours before the scheduled use, while we will try to accommodate all requests for reservations received, however availability of the equipment if given shorter notice.
PHOTOCOPYING
The photocopying and fax machines are located downstairs on the first floor in the Music Office, Room 143.
