A Journey for Self-Discovery…
Spring Awakening
By Frank Wedekind, Translation by Jonathan
Franzen
Director – Dr. David Ruebhausen
November 6-8 & 13-15 at 7:30 PM
Norton Auditorium
With the overabundance of sexual imagery and sexual scandals in the public-eye today, it is hard to imagine a time when a lack of sexual awareness and total sexual repression was the norm. Spring Awakening is a “coming of age” tale that follows the frustrations and sexual awakening of teens in a culture that fears and loathes one of the most basic of human functions—SEX! This provocative play, which serves as the source material for Broadway’s current hit musical of the same, seeks to show us both the scarring and laughable side of puberty. Though innocent in its language, this play deals with serious sexual and adult issues (including rape, pregnancy, abortion, suicide and homosexuality) and tickets will not be sold to anyone under 16 years of age unless accompanied by a parent or teacher. Spring Awakening will be presented with the audience on the Norton stage so seating will be limited for each performance.
The Diviners
By: James Leonard, Jr.
Director – Prof. Charlton James
March 12, 13 & 14 at 7:30 PM and March 15 at 2:00 PM
Norton Auditorium
In the 1930s mythical southern Indiana town of Zion, water and faith are hard to find. Buddy Layman, a boy who is left emotionally and mentally scarred after losing his mother in a drowning accident, has a compelling gift for sensing water coupled with a overwhelming fear of it. C.C. Showers, a backsliding preacher who is seen by the town’s people as their long awaited savior, wanders into town looking for work. The friendship and common bond that grows between the disturbed young man and disenchanted preacher lead us all on a journey for truth, faith, and hope. Winner of the American College Theatre Festival, The Diviners has become a favorite modern classic, touching the hearts of audiences of all ages.
How I Learned to Drive
By: Paula Vogel
Director – Student Director TBA
April 9 - 11 at 7:30 PM
Norton Auditorium
Winner of the 1998 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, How I Learned to Drive explores the troubled relationship of a young woman and her uncle and how the innocence of teen-age driving lessons turn into sexual manipulation and molestation. This landmark play of contemporary theatre and feminist drama contains adult language and sexual subject matter that may be offensive to some audience members.
